Position Summary
The Community Support Team (CST) Peer Support Specialist is an individual with lived experience of substance use disorder who provides support, guidance, and advocacy to individuals facing similar challenges. The Peer Support Specialist for CST is responsible for assisting the team leader with the coordination of services across all levels of care and participates in the treatment team process. They also share personal experiences and provide practical help to promote recovery and improve the quality of life of the people they serve.
Entry Requirements
- Personal experience with mental health challenges and/or substance use disorder and sustained recovery
- A high school diploma
- No substantiated findings of abuse or neglect listed on the North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry or Central Registry
- Ability to pass a background check
- First aid and CPR
- Valid Driver's License
Certification and Training:
- North Carolina Peer Support Specialist certification.
- Completion of relevant peer support training.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work as a multi-disciplinary team member in a positive and productive manner
- Knowledge of intervention and behavior management methods, strategies, and techniques
- Knowledge of quality documentation as required by agency standards, rules, and regulations
- Self-awareness and understanding of professional boundaries
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with families, coworkers, supervisors, and other individuals
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge of the agency's organizational structure, standard operating procedures, and policies
- Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach to client care.
- Ability to maintain boundaries and confidentiality.
- Ability to work within Pitt, Martin, or Edgecombe Counties.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Provides one-on-one support, sharing your own recovery experience to inspire hope and offer encouragement.
- Builds trusting relationships with individuals and provides emotional support to promote recovery and resiliency.
- Provides guidance and advocacy to individuals to help them navigate through the mental health system, social services, and other support systems.
- Empowers clients to self-advocate and access essential community resources.
- Help clients identify and connect with community resources like housing, employment, education, and healthcare.
- Provide information and referrals to appropriate services.
- Assists individuals in developing and implementing recovery plans and goal-setting strategies.
- Collaborates with mental health providers, social workers, and other professionals to ensure continuity of care and access to resources.
- Maintains accurate records of interactions with individuals, progress, and outcomes in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Participates in the initial development, implementation, and ongoing revision of the PCP.
- Communicates the individual’s progress and the effectiveness of the strategies and interventions to the Team Lead as outlined in the PCP.
Full-time position that reports to the Community Support Team Lead.
Work Type: In-Person in North Carolina
Work Schedule: 8:00am – 5:00pm with some evening and weekend availability required
